The Stretch Bed

A flat-packable, washable bed made from recycled plastic, heavy-duty canvas, and galvanised steel. Designed in community for the conditions that break ordinary furniture: heat, dust, freight, and crowded houses. A good bed is health hardware, not furniture.

How it goes together

Two galvanised steel poles thread through the canvas long-edge sleeves and the top holes of two crossed-plank X-legs. Tensioning pulls the poles deep into the leg holes, so the canvas itself is structural: the bed will not stand without it, and nothing needs a screw or a tool.

  • Recycled HDPE plastic X-trestle legs

Two crossed-plank "X" trestles, pressed from community-collected plastic waste · Defy Design, Sydney (current) / On-Country (future)

  • Galvanised steel pipe

26.9mm OD × 2.6mm wall, 1950mm length · DNA Steel Direct, Alice Springs

  • Heavy-duty Australian canvas

Fully washable, quick-drying · Centre Canvas, Alice Springs

Every bed carries 20kg of recycled HDPE out of landfill, pressed into legs at a plant that can move to community ownership.
